HierComm’s business consists of four groups of products and services:
• Comprehensive Telecommunications Systems Planning Services
HierComm provides a systems engineering approach to telecommunications planning that first inventories current services, their performance and infrastructure and then plans an evolving communications network infrastructure that meets the current and projected future needs of the community. Such a system planning approach is in sharp contrast to communications network deployments that are hastily conceived without thorough consideration of the objectives and needs of the community and the various technological alternatives available to serve those objectives and needs.
• Communications Network Design Services
HierComm follows a systems optimization approach to network design that adapts the network architecture to the local terrain and the defined objectives and needs of the community. Such network topologies range from traditional sectoral cellular topologies to multi-layered, hierarchical structures and Ad Hoc mobile and fixed peer-to-peer communications. In many rural areas, hilly terrains with extensive forest cover do not lend themselves to conventional point-to-multipoint network layouts. HierComm’s network design employs a variety of architectures and technologies to meet these terrain and requirement challenges. The end result is a network design that meets community needs in a very cost effective manner.
• Wireless Infrastructure and Subscriber Communications Equipment
Having comprehensively planned a communications system responsive to community needs and designed a network architecture that is optimal for plan objectives, HierComm is able to provide the standards-based IEEE 802.11 WiFi and 802.16 WiMAX infrastructure and subscriber equipment necessary to implement the network design. Critical hardware components necessary to implement new network architecture such as passive signal repeaters along with proprietary software features required for the highest throughput performance are both part of HierComm’s product portfolio. These hardware and software components convert previous network designs into operating reality.
• Advanced Wireless Communications Technologies
To support its corporate dedication to broadband communications for the Rural World, HierComm supports an on-going research and development program that features:
- New amplifier design that provides significantly improved signal-to-noise ratios and extended range, permitting networks with low access point density.
- Development of a new approach to amplifiers that substantially reduces the power required for wireless communications.
- Development of network element and component technology to enhance flexibility in wireless network architecture.
